The Bremen Roland - World Cultural Heritage 

The statue of liberty legend was 600 years old.

 

"Roland was a young knight in the fight against the Saracens by defending his emperor Karl the Great. He died a heroic death .The Roland statues are symbols for urban rights and freedom -. especially in the old commercial cities who had come to power and wealth . The ancient statues are covered in documents dating from the 12th and 13th century are today in various European cities. Riga, Dubrovnik, Prague and Verona - and of course in Bremen For 600 years the Roland carved in stone.On its place outside the town hall he symbolize as the guarantor of freedom of the Hanseatic city. His predecessor made of wood had been burned down 1366 as "heretical symbol" of the followers of Archbishop Albrecht II." (Copyright Radio Bremen)
